Japanese13-stringedkotoThekoto(琴or筝)isatraditionalJapanesestringedmusicalinstrumentderivedfromChinesezither(Guzheng).ThekotoisthenationalinstrumentofJapan.[1]Kotoareabout180centimetres(71in)longandhave13stringsthatarestrungover13movablebridgesalongthelengthoftheinstrument.Playerscanadjustthestringpitchesbymovingthesebridgesbeforeplaying,andusethreefingerpicks(onthumb,forefinger,andmiddlefinger)topluckthestrings.

Thecharacterforkotoisalsoreadassōincertaincontexts.Thoughoftencalledbyanumberofothernames,thesetermsalmostalwaysrefertosimilar,butdifferentinstruments,suchastheChineseguzheng(筝)orguqin(琴,calledkininJapanese

HistoryoftheKoto

ThekotowasintroducedtoJapaninthe7thto8thcenturyfromChina,andlargelyderivedfromtheChineseGuzheng.Itwasinitiallyplayedonlyintheroyalcourt,butthissituationchangedinthe17thcentury--primarilybecauseoftheinfluenceofYatsuhashiKengyo(1614-1684).Thoughthekoto,likemanyJapaneseinstrumentsderivedfromChineseones,haslikelynotchangedmuchoverthecenturies,theguzhenghas,andthusitisnolongervalidtocallthemthesameinstrument.Thekotousedingagakuiscalledgakuso.

YatsuhashiKengyowasablindshamisenplayerwholearnedkotofromanofficialcourtplayernamedHosui,indefianceoftheruleswhichthenstatedthatkotocouldnotbetaughttoblindpeople(orwomen,incidentally).Possiblybecauseofhispersonalexperiencewiththeserestrictions,Yatsuhashispenttherestofhislifemakingthekotomoreaccessible.

Heinventedanewtranquiltuning(平调子hirajoushi)toplaythecommonpeople'ssongsmorenaturally.Hecomposed(oriscreditedwithcomposing)piecesthatarestillirreplaceablestaplesofthekotorepertoiretoday,includingRokudanandMidare.(Thesecompositionswerepartlyresponsibleforthekotobecomingrespectedasasoloinstrumentinitsownright.)Perhapsmostimportantly,hisexampleledothernon-elite,includingwomen,tolearnthekototoo.

Akotoplayertoday.TheinfluenceofWesternpopmusichasmadethekotolessprominent,althoughitisstilldevelopingasaninstrument.Worksarebeingwrittenfor20-and25-stringedkotosand17-stringbasskotos,andanewgenerationofplayerssuchasKazueSawai,MichiyoYagi(whostudiedunderSawai)arefindingplacesforthekotointoday'sjazz,experimentalmusicandevenpop.

JuneKuramoto,ofthejazzfusiongroupHiroshima,wasoneofthefirstkotoperformerstopopularizethekotoinanon-traditionalfusionstyle.DavidBowieusedthekotointheinstrumentalpieceMossGardenonhisalbumHeroes.PaulGilbert,apopularshredguitarist,recordedhiswife,EmiplayingthekotoonhissongKotoGirlfromthealbumAlligatorFarm.JRock/VisualKeibandKagrra,arewellknownforusingtraditionalJapanesemusicalinstrumentsinmanyoftheirsongs,anexamplebeingUtakata(うたかた),asongwherethekotohasaprominentplace.

Well-knownsoloperformersoutsideofJapanincludekotomasterandaward-winningrecordingartistElizabethFalconer,whoalsostudiedforadecadeattheesteemedSawaiKotoSchoolinTokyo,aswellaskotomasterLindaKakoCaplan,CanadianDaishihan(Grandmaster)andamemberofFukuoka'sChikushiKotoSchoolforovertwodecades.DavidHorvitzpioneeredtheinstrumentintothecontemporaryindierocksceneplayingonXiuXiu'snewalbum,TheAirForce.[citationneeded]
