BaJin(PaChin)[realnameLiFeigan]wasbornonNovember25,1904inChengdu,SichuanProvince,intoanofficial'sfamily.Hereceivedagoodeducationunderprivatetutorship.TheMayFourthMovementin1919imbuedhimwithbothanarchicanddemocraticideals.Thefollowingyear,hestudiedEnglishatChengduForeignLanguageSchool.In1923,hemovedtoShanghai,andthentoNanjingwhereheenteredthepreparatoryschoolaffiliatedwiththeSoutheastChinaUniversity.Duringthetwo-yearstudyhewroteandtranslatedseveralarticlesonanarchism.

In1927,hewenttoFrance,wherehewrotehisfirstnovelDestructionaboutadepressedyounganarchist.Afterthat,hehaswrittenalotofbooks,includingnovels,shortstories,andprocessandessays,withatotalofsixmillionwords.Hismainworksinclude:the14-volumeWorksofBaJin(publishedin1958-1962),SelectedWorksofBaJin,whichincludedFamily,Spring,Autumn,TheTrilogyofLove,ADreamofSea,AutumninSpring.

HispennamewaschosenfromtheChinesetransliterationsofthefirstsyllableofthenameBakuninandofthelastsyllableofthenameKropotkin,twoanarchiststhatheliked.

BaJinhaseditedmanymagazines.From1935to1949,heservedaseditor-in-chiefoftheCulturalLifeandPingmingPublishingHousesinShanghai.Whileservingaseditor-in-chiefofPingmingPublishingHouse,healsoworkedasvice-chairmanandchairmanofShanghaiFederationofLiteraryandArtCircles.Since1949,heservedaschiefeditorofLiteraryandArtMonthlybasedinShanghai,HarvestandShanghaiLiterature.

InSeptember,1953,Bawaselectedvice-chairmanofChinaWriters'AssociationwhileworkingaschiefeditorofShanghai-basedliterarymagazinesofLiteraryandArtMonthly,HarvestandShanghaiLiterature.

In1962,hewaselectedchairmanofShanghaiFederationofLiteraryandArtsCircles.BacktoworkfromtenyearsofCulturalRevolutionturmoilinChina,BaworkedaschairmanofChinaWriters'Association,vice-chairmanofChinaFederationofLiteraryandArtCircles,andvice-chairmanofCPPCCShanghaiMunicipalCommitteefrom1977to1983.

Since1983,Bahasbeenavice-chairmanofCPPCCNationalCommitteeandchairmanofChinaWriters'Association.

HewasamemberofthefirstCPPCC,vice-chairmanof6th,7thand8thCPPCCNationalCommittees,adeputyto1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5thNationalPeople'sCongresses(NPC)andstandingcommitteememberof5thNPC.

Hisworkshavebeentranslatedintoandpublishedinmanyforeignlanguages.HehasalsobeengivenprizesandmedalsbyItalyandtheformerSovietUnionforhiscontributionsintranslatingandintroducingtoChinesepeopleforeignliteraryworksandpromotingSino-foreignculturalexchange.HeisalsoanhonorarymemberoftheAmericanInstituteofArtsandLetters.

Inhislateyears,heconcentratedoneditingtheCompleteWorksofBaJin(publishedin1994).

BaJinisoneofthefewwritersinChinawholivenotongovernmentpaybutonroyaltiesfromtheirworks.Onhis80thbirthday,hesaid:I'velivedonroyaltiesallmylife.Itisthereaderswhohavesupportedme.

Althoughcomingfromafeudalfamily,BaJinisespeciallyenlightenedwithhistwochildren.Bothmarriedpartnersoftheirownchoice.HisdaughterisnowaleadingmemberoftheeditorialdepartmentofabigChineseliterarymagazinewhilehissonisarisingnovelist.

AfterhiswifeXiaoShandiedin1973,BaJindidnotremarry.Heisstillpassionatelydevotedtohisdeceasedwife.Hesaid:WhenIlosemyabilitytowork,IhopetherewillbeseveralcopiesoffictionstranslatedbyXiaoShanonmysickbed.AfterIclosemyeyes,pleaseletmyashesbemixedwithhers.

BAJincelebratedhis99thbirthdayonNovember25,2002,orrather,theliteratiofShanghaiandalloverChina,celebratedtheapproachingcentenaryofthewriter,accordingtoChinesecustom.

BahasstayedinHuadongHospitalforyears,withhisabilitytowalkandspeaklosttoParkinson'sdisease.Butthewriter'spositionasprobablythemostimportantfigurein20thcenturyChineseliteraturemakeshissurvivalamatterofgreatimportance.

Ofallthemajorwritersactiveintheformerhalfofthe20thcentury,Baisprobablytheonlyonestillliving.
