　　Ishouldlikefirstofall,toonceagainthanktheNorwegianNobelmitteefortheawardtheyhavemadetotheUnitedNationsPeace-KeepingOperations.Theirdecisionhasbeenacclaimedallovertheworld.Itakethisopportunityalsotoexpressonceagainmydeepgratitudetothecountries,whichhavecontributedtroopsorprovidedlogisticalsupporttotheseoperations.Itistotheirwillingco-operationthatweowethesuccessofthisgreatexperimentinconflictcontrol.

　　Peace─thewordevokesthesimplestandmostcherisheddreamofhumanity.Peaceis,andhasalwaysbeen,theultimatehumanaspiration.Andyetourhistoryoverwhelminglyshowsthatwhilewespeakincessantlyofpeace,ourAquinastellsaverydifferentstory.

　　Peaceisaneasywordtosayinanylanguage.AsSecretary-GeneraloftheUnitedNationsIhearitsofrequentlyfromsomanydifferentmouthsanddifferentsources,thatitsometimesseemstometobegeneralincantationmoreorlessdeprivedofpracticalmeaning.Whatwereallymeanbypeace?
