OnedaythirtyyearsagoMarseilleslayintheburningsun.AblazingsunuponafierceAugustdaywasnogreaterrarityinsouthernFrancethenthanatanyothertimebeforeorsince.EverythinginMarseillesandaboutMarseilleshadstaredatthefervidsun,andbeenstaredatinreturn,untilastaringhabithadbecomeuniversalthere.Strangerswerestaredoutofcountenancebystaringwhitehouses,staringwhitestreets,staringtractsofaridroad,staringhillsfromwhichverdurewasburntaway.Theonlythingstobeseennotfixedlystaringandglaringwerethevinesdroopingundertheirloadsofgrapes.Thesedidoccasionallywinkalittle,asthehotairbarelymovedtheirfaintleaves.

Blinds,shutters,curtains,awnings,wereallclosedanddrawntokeepoutthestare.Grantitbutachinkorakeyhole,anditshotinlikeawhitehotarrow.
