HongKongwasacrowncolonyoftheUnitedKingdomfrom1842untilthetransferofitssovereigntytothePeople'sRepublicofChinain1997.TheSino-BritishJointDeclarationandtheBasicLawofHongKongstipulatethatHongKongoperateswithahighdegreeofautonomyuntilatleast2047,fiftyyearsafterthetransfer.Underthepolicyofonecountry,twosystems,theCentralPeople'sGovernmentisresponsiblefortheterritory'sdefenceandforeignaffairs,whileHongKongmaintainsitsownlegalsystem,policeforce,monetarysystem,customspolicy,immigrationpolicy,anddelegatestointernationalorganisationsandevents.
