硕士研究生招生初试一般设置四个单元考试科目，即思想政治理论、外国语、业务课一和业务课二，满分分别为100分、100分、150分、150分。如厦门大学英语相关的专业2019年招生目录中主要有英语语言文学、英语笔译、英语口译、外国语言学及应用语言学等。

英语语言文学(英美文学研究方向)的初试科目为①101思想政治理论②242俄语(二外)或243日语(二外)或244法语(二外)或245德语(二外)③708写作与英汉互译④814阅读及英美文学、语言学基础。

英语笔译的英语笔译①101思想政治理论②211翻译硕士英语③357英语翻译基础④448汉语写作与百科知识。

而复旦大学的英语语言文学的初试科目为①101思想政治理论;②252俄语(二外)(或)253日语(二外)(或)254法语(二外)(或)255德语(二外);③708基础英语;④813英美文学史(或)814英语语言学理论 。在业务课二方面与厦门大学有些差异。
