Anetworkengineerhandlesallofthe“plumbing”foracompany’scomputers,connectingofficeswithT1lines,hookingthemuptotheInternet,andconfiguringallinternalsystemssuchasnetroutersandfirewalls.ThepositionusuallyspillsoverintosomeUnixsystemsadministrationwork,but“basically,it’saplumbingjob,”saysoneengineer.Configuringastart-upWebcompanyisaprettyeasynetworkdesignjob;mostofthesecompanieshaveasmallstaffandonlyonelocation.ButifyouworkforCitibank,forexample,thenetworkisincrediblycomplicatedwithtiersandtiersofnetworkengineers.Ifyou’rewillingtowearasuitandtieeveryday,gotoworkforabankwhereyou’llmaketwiceasmuchasanywhereelse.Anetworkengineerneedstoknowhowtousesomebasicnetworkdeviceslike“packetsniffers,”buttheworkitselfdoesn’tutilizealotoftools.“It’sa‘noodly’job;youhavetobeabletothinkyourwaythroughproblemsandunderstandhowstuffworks,”saysoneprofessional.Youdon’tspendalotoftimetyping,butratherinfrontofwhiteboards(likeachalkboardyouwriteonwithmarkers)drawingpicturestovisualizeyoursolutions.Atypicaldaydemandsatypicalhours;networkengineersusuallyworkoff-hourswhenthey’retinkeringwithsomething,otherwisethey’llinterrupteveryoneelse’swork.It’stheearmarkoftechiestoshowuplater,oftenaround10or11a.m.,butthey’reusuallythereuntil7,8or9p.m.Andmostlikelythey’rewearingapagerandarealwaysoncall.Networkinghasacultureuntoitself,andasubcultureamongthosewhoworkontheNet.Butnetworkingisreallyonlyglamoroustopeopleinthefield.“Anyoneinthegeneralpublicwouldnotbelike,‘cool,you’reanetworkconsultant,’”saysoneinsider.

“ItookonenetworkingclassincollegeandeverythingIknowaboutmodernnetworkingIlearnedonthejob,”saysoneengineer.Todaytherearecertifications,likeCCIE(CiscoCertifiedInternetworkExperts),andtheclassesarequitedifficult.“Butfromamanager’sperspective,itseemsasthoughthepeoplewhoarecertifiedaren’tactuallyverysmart.They’vespenttwoyearsstudyingforthistest,butthey’veneveractuallysetuparouterbefore.Ilookforintelligenceandenthusiasm,becauseyou’regoingtolearnitallonthejobanyway.”Routingandnetworkingisamindset—understandinghowstuffflowsfromoneplacetoanother—soitdoeshelpifyoustudiedmath,computerscience,orengineeringasanundergraduate.“However,oneofthebestnetworkengineersIknowwasaliteraturemajorincollege.Soyouractualbackgroundreallymeansnothing.It’sallabouttenacity—beingabletositinfrontofaproblemthatyouhavenoideawhyit’sdoingwhatit’sdoinguntilyousolveit,whichisusuallyat2or3a.m.,becauseyouhavetodothisstuffwhennooneelseisaroundsoyoudon’tinterruptthecompany’swork.”

“IstartedoutasasystemsUnixadministrator,thenmovedtonetworkengineering,thenswitchedtobeingaprogrammer,andnowI’mmanagingacompanyandhandlingbusinessdevelopment,”saysoneformernetworkprofessional.Thesamethinkingthatmakesforatalentednetworkengineerapplieswelltoprogramming,systemsadministration,andothersortsoffieldsemployinglogic,likeengineering.However,theskillsthemselvesareveryspecific,narrow,andvertical.“Therearen’treallyanyindustrieswhereparallelskillswouldbeappropriate.It’snotlikeyoucansay,‘oh,Iseehowthiscouldapplytobeingachef,’forexample.”
