Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English. You should write your answer on Answer Sheet 2.

成语(Chinese idioms)是汉语中的一种独特的表达方式，大多由四个汉字组成。它们高度简练且形式固定，但通常能形象地表达深刻的含义。成语大多来源于古代的文学作品，通常与某些神话、传说或者历史事件有关。如果不知道某个成语的出处，就很难理解其确切含义。所以学习成语有助于人们更好地理解传统文化。成语在日常会话和文学创作中广泛使用。恰当使用成语可以使一个人的语言更具表现力，交流更有效。

Chinese idioms are a unique way of expression in Chinese. They are mostly composed of four Chinese characters. Highly concise and fixed in form as they are, yet profound meanings can be conveyed profoundly. Most of them are derived from ancient Chinese literature, and are related to certain myths, legends, or historical events. Its hard to understand its exact meaning without knowing its original source. Therefore, learning idioms helps people better understand Chinese culture. Idioms are widely used in daily conversation and literary creations. Using idioms properly can make a persons language more expressive and communication more effective.

1. 成语是汉语中一种独特的表达方式。

注意独特可以使用unique。

2. 大多由四个汉字组成。

这里可以跟前面的分开，另起短句，用they指代。也可以跟前面的连起来，使用逗号隔开，翻译为Chinese idioms are a unique way of expression in Chinese，mostly composed of four Chinese characters。

由...组成这里用的是be composed of。也可以使用make up of。

3. 它们高度简练且形式固定，但通常能形象地表达深刻的含义。

出现了但可以考虑用转折词yet,也可以使用让步状语从句，翻译为Although highly concise and fixed in form, they can convey meanings vividly。形象地也可以用vividly。

4. 成语大多来源于古代的文学作品，通常与某些神话、传说或者历史事件有关。

来源于可以使用come from，root in，be traced to, originate from。文学作品使用literature或者literature work都可以。

5. 如果不知道某个成语的出处，就很难理解其确切含义。

这个句子的重点在于很难理解其确切含义由于英汉句意重点的差异，英语一般是先重点，而汉语一般是重点在句子末尾，所以翻译时应该把Its hard to understand its exact meaning放在前面，再加上条件without knowing its original source。确切的还可以翻译为precise。理解也可以使用catch/get。

6. 所以学习成语有助于人们更好地解传统文化。

这句可以翻译为Therefore, learning idioms helps people better understand Chinese culture.或者Therefore, learning idioms helps people have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.

7. 成语在日常会话和文学创作中广泛使用。

Idioms are widely used in daily conversation and literary creations. 要注意理解这里的日常修饰的是会话，所以应该放在conversation的前面。

8. 恰当使用成语可以使一个人的语言更具表现力，交流更有效。

恰当使用可以翻译为using idioms properly或者可以使用名词短语proper use of idioms。一个人的也可以翻译为ones因为不是特指，注意用词的客观性，不要使用you，we这类的词。
