美国南卡罗莱纳大学基本概况

　　Inthe1950s,theuniversitybeganrecruitingnational-caliberfacultyandextendeditspresencebeyondColumbiawiththeestablishmentofcampusesincommunitiesacrossSouthCarolina.OnSept.11,1963,HenrieD.Monteith,RobertAndersonandJamesSolomonbecamethefirstAfrican-Americanstudentstoenrollattheuniversityinthe20thcentury;in1965,MonteithbecamethefirstAfrican-Americangraduate,earningaB.S.inbiochemistry.

　　Intheensuingyears,Carolinaunderwentexplosivegrowthasthebabyboomgenerationenteredcollege.Enrollmentstoodat5,660in1960,butby1979hadreachednearly26,000studentsontheColumbiacampusalone.TomeettheneedsofthesestudentsandSouthCarolina'schangingeconomy,theuniversityputnewemphasisonresearchandintroducedinnovativedegreeprogramsaswellasanumberofnewschoolsandcolleges.Carolinahadbecomeatrueresearchuniversity.

　　整合及注册人数的激增

　　Inthe1980sand1990s,theuniversitycontinuedtodevelopitsresourcestobetterservethePalmettoState.AconcerteddrivetoachievenationalrecognitionbroughtCarolinaintothe21stcentury.In2001,theUniversityofSouthCarolinacelebratedalegacyof200yearsofeducatingleadersforthefutureofSouthCarolina,thenationandtheworld.

　　Horseshoe改建及建校二百周年

　　在发展的同时南卡罗莱纳大学也铭记过去，并对过去给予褒奖。1972年，学校启动了改建计划。改建计划恢复了19世纪Horseshoe校区的建筑。1977年，在Horseshoe老建筑的基础上，学校开设了荣誉学院。荣誉学院的行政办公室和大二、大三学生宿舍也主要是在Horseshoe。
