BeingoneoftheoldestuniversitylibrariesinChina,thehistoryofZhejiangUniversityLibrarycanbetracedbackto1897whenQiushiAcademyLibrarywasfounded.InSeptember1998,anewZhejiangUniversitywasestablishedonthebasisoftheamalgamationofthefourformerindividualuniversities,namelyZhejiangUniversity,HangzhouUniversity,ZhejiangAgriculturalUniversityandZhejiangMedicalUniversity.ThelibrariesoftheseuniversitieswerecorrespondinglymergedintotheunifiedZhejiangUniversityLibraries(ZUL).

ZULconsistsoffivebranchlibraries,inseparatelocationsinHangzhou:theLibraryofscienceandTechnologyinYuquanCampus,theLibraryofArtandScienceinXixiCampus,theLibraryofAgricultureinHuajiachiCampus,theLibraryofMedicineandtheLibraryofBasicSubjectsinZijingangCampus.ZULheadquarterisinYuquanCampus.Thetotalbuildingareaofthelibrariesamountsto86,000squaremeters,withabout5,300seats.

TheNiTiechengHumanandArtsLibraryfinanciallysponsortedbytheHongKongentrepreneur,Mr.NiTiecheng,andTheYuanEngineeringLibrarydonatedbyChinese-AmaricanscientistDr.YuanShaowenarelocatedintheLibraryofScienceandTechnology.TheZhejiangUniversityBankofPublicationswhichcontributedbyitsfacultyandalumniisintheLibraryofBasicSubjects.

ZULcurrentlyhasastaffof205.Therearemorethan40researchlibrarians(professors)orassociateresearchlibrarians(associateprofessors).Agalaxyofemployeesmakestheprovisionofexcellentservicepossible.

Bytheendof2006,thetotalcollectionsheldbythelibraryamountto5,720,000volumes(items).Inaddition,ZULholdsover64kindsofonlinedatabaseswithmorethan200items.ThecollectionofZULcoversalmostalltheacademicsubject,featuringmainlyinmechanicalengineering,instrumentation,powerandenergyengineering,electronicsandengineering,chemistryandchemicalengineering,medicine,agriculture,biologicalscience,localdocumentation,Dunhuangstudyandpsychology,etc.

ZULoperatestheinternationaladvancedintegratedautomationsystem“Horizon”,whichconnectthefivebranchesthroughcampusnetworkandofferonlinecirculationserviceformorethan70,000registeredreaders.Thevolumesofcirculationamountto2,500,000annually.Inrecentyears,thecontentsofthelibrariesserviceshavebeenexpandedanddevelopedrapidly,especiallyinvisualanddigitallibraryservicessuchasinformationresearch,noveltyretrieve,documentdeliveryandinterlibraryloan,SDIservice,personalservice,usertraining,etc.Morethan6000usersvisitthelibraries'websiteeveryday.

TheChina-USMillionBookDigitalLibrary(CADAL)project,organizedbyZULandtheGraduateSchoolofChineseAcademyofScience,isanimportantpartofpublicserviceprogramin“211project”duringthetenth“Five-YearPlan”period.SponsoredbyZULandcooperatedwiththeotheracademiclibrariesinZhejiangprovince,theZhejiangAcademicDigitalLibraryandInformationSystem(ZADLIS)projectisstarted.ZULencourageitsfacultytocarryonacademicresearchandexchange.Thelibraryhasheldanumberofnationalacademicforums.About100thesisandseveralmonographshavebeenpublishedeveryyear.

Wearenowfacingwitharareopportunityfordeveloping.Duringthetenth“Five-YearPlan”period,we'restartingthesecondstageconstructionitemsof“211project”and“985project”.Agroupofspeciallibrariesinnewcampuswillbeformedincomingyears.FollowingtheconstructionofCADAL,CALIS(ChinaAcademicLibraryInformationSystem)andZADLISproject,ZULwillenteranaccelerateddevelopingstage.Wearetakingfulladvantageoftheopportunitiesandmakingeveryefforttobuildthelibrariesintothefirst-classoneintheworld.
